Room Spray Base RECIPE

We no longer sell the Unscented Room Spray Base as it was not purchased often.  Here are a couple of recipes you can use to make your own Room and Linen Spray Bases.

Room Spray Base Recipe
Distilled water—5 ounces
Vodka  or other clear alcohol - 3 oz.

Blend together and add essential oils as directed in the recipe.  Make sure you shake your spray before each use.

Also, put a date on the bottle when you blended this so you know when it has expired - It should be used within 2-3 months of making.

Yes, you may still need to add emulsifier to your essential oils BEFORE You add them to the above recipe. We would suggest you do.

You will need to purchase a Fine Mist Spray bottle to mix in

Or a 8 oz Trigger Sprayer

***You can use unflavored Vodka or other grain alcohol.  Because it will have alcohol that can be ingested, PLEASE keep it out of the reach of Children.

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL or DENATURED ALCOHOL - they can cause lung damage and are toxic if ingested.

Linen Spray Base Recipe - is actually the same as above, however usually not made as strong with essential oils
Distilled water—5 ounces
Vodka  or other clear alcohol - 3 oz.

Blend together and add essential oils as directed in the recipe.  Often times recipes for linen applications will be lightly scented.

However, for some blends it may require an addition of emulsifier to accommodate the higher concentration of essential oils used.

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL or DENATURED ALCOHOL - they can cause lung damage and are toxic if ingested.

  1. Adding essential oils or fragrance oils to the Spray RECIPES may make the finished product appear cloudy. This cloudy reaction is normal with some essential oils.
  2. Be sure to add emulsifier to your essential oils BEFORE adding them to the Water Base.
If you do not add the essential oils to some emulsifier your essential oils will just float on top and not mix in with the Water
  3. Emulsifier should be mixed with the essential oils 2:1 (for every drop of essential oils use a 2 drops of emulsifier).

Thank you for posting this info!! Fee questions. What is the purpose of the alcohol? Is it just to act as a preservative? Is the 3oz to 5oz(water) ratio absolute or can that be adjusted? Thanks again

Birch Hill Happenings Answer: The Alcohol is used for both an emulsifier and as a mild preservative. We would suggest you use that ratio, but you can experiment too. Alcohol is not great as a preservative or as an emulsifier, so that is why the high ratio of alcohol to water.
